VMI Release: Birsner Names Two Assistant Lacrosse Coaches

 11308278LEXINGTON, Va. – University of Massachusetts men’s lacrosse alumni Tom Celentaniand Brendan Schroeder were named members of the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) coaching staff by program leader Jon Birsner for the 2015-16 season Wednesday. Both will fill assistant coaching roles for Birsner.

Celentani completed his standout collegiate career in 2012 with USILA All-America accolades alongside NEILA All-Region and All-CAA First Team as the senior on close defense recorded a team-best 24 caused turnovers with 32 groundballs.

In addition to his athletic success, Celentani was awarded USILA Scholar All-America and NEILA Scholar Athlete status in 2012. He joins the VMI staff as its head assistant coach after two seasons as an assistant at Franklin Pierce University, where he primarily coached the defenders and goalkeepers.

Schroeder completed his fourth season at short-stick defensive midfield for head coach Greg Cannella during the most recent UMass campaign. In 2015, he tallied personal-bests in points (7), assists (6) and groundballs (19) before participating in the NEILA East-West All-Star Game.

Schroeder finished his career with 41 games played, 16 points via six goals and 10 assists, 32 groundballs and seven caused turnovers. He previously competed for Birsner during his year spent studying and competing for the Naval Academy Preparatory School prior to his time at the University of Massachusetts.
